When embarking on your journey to create either a: Connected Home, Business or Farm it is important from the offset to determine the access or connection technology. Then determine what the local network connectivity would be depending on the application.

Network Connectivity Technologies

This can be split into the connection from the home / business or Farm to the Internet or Mobile Network. Here we simply split it up into Internet connectivity and GSM connectivity.

Internet connectivity would be anything that has an IP address and connects to the Internet, so this could cover:

  • 5 G also called GPRS
  • 3G, 4G and 5G Mobile Data Networks
  • Fibre to the Anything (FTTX)
  • Broadband fixed line using any modulation technology (xDSL)

GSM Connectivity would be any technology that does not use the dedicated Data Networks of the Mobile Operator or IP, these would cover:

  • SMS traffic
  • USSD menu driven application

The GSM connectivity methods would normally be considered Legacy Technologies however when it comes to secure one time passwords and menu driven purchased such as prepaid services both are still mainstream technologies.

Sensor Network

This is the connectivity local to your smart home, business or Farm, for connection the Sensor to your Application. For simplicity we have chosen to only focus on the mainstream sensor technologies you will come across. These being:

  • Direct Cable Access
  • Wireless LAN / WiFi
  • Long Range multi point radio frequency technologies sometimes referred to as RF
  • GSM

The reason we start with the sensors is that once you have deployed a certain sensor that would normally determine the way forward. Due to the fact that technologies are grouped and one sensor access technology does not work with another sensor controller unit. To overcome this limitation we can use a Smart Edge Technology or Hosted Internet of Things (IoT) platform, that has a service broker for interworking between systems.

The Applications

Different sensor use different bandwidths or capacity on the network, so the technology must be able to carry the workload. Video is the most bandwidth hungry system so it is recommended that pre signal analytics is done on site and not stream continuously back to the main site.
